AbSec – NSW Child, Family and Community Peak Aboriginal Corporation

AbSec is the peak organisation concerned with the welfare of Aboriginal children, young people and families. We advocate for their rights, while supporting carers and communities. Our main priority is to keep children and young people safe, with the key goal of also keeping them within their family and community. It is vitally important that young people grow up surrounded by those who understand them, comfortable within their own culture where they will thrive.

We work with both Aboriginal community-controlled organisations and non-Aboriginal organisations, as well as government agencies and other stakeholders, to steer and coordinate efforts to close the gap. Our vision is a society where all children and young people have the same opportunities, regardless of cultural heritage.

AbSec ensures Aboriginal children, young people, families, carers and communities have access to services and support that give them the best possible chance to fulfil their potential.

The bottom line is that we want to see Aboriginal children and young people cared for in safe, thriving Aboriginal families and communities, where they are raised strong in spirit and identity. We want them to have every opportunity for lifelong wellbeing and connection to culture, surrounded by holistic supports.

A message from our CEO

As the peak Aboriginal child protection organisation in New South Wales, AbSec is known for our work supporting families. Our top priority is the safety of children and young people, while our core goal is to see them thriving within their own communities – preferably with their own family – and connected to their culture. Beyond our core mission we engage in broader community initiatives, one of which is our Family Fun Day that we host every year to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

This free event, the largest of its kind in the Inner West of Sydney is not just a celebration; it’s a powerful tool for community building. It showcases the richness of First Nations culture and heritage and is open to all people, both Aboriginal and non-Indigenous, fostering a spirit of multiculturalism and mutual respect. And true to its name, it’s a day filled with fun!

Your involvement can vary from making a donation to hosting a stall. Any contribution you make will be deeply appreciated by both our organisation and the wider community. Our Family Fun Day is a landmark event on the calendar, attracting attendees from near and far and eagerly anticipated each year.

Your support will not only enhance this festive day but also bolster an organisation committed to safeguarding children and young people throughout the state. There is still an appalling gap between the welfare of Aboriginal children and their peers, with those of First Nations heritage facing far greater levels of disadvantage.

We are working hard to correct this, but we cannot do it alone. Join us in making a meaningful difference. Your partnership can help bridge gaps and build a stronger, more inclusive future.
